Get ready to embark on a journey of single-handed fan veil technique, flow, and choreography!
In this series, students will learn a choreographed group routine while exploring the unique shapes, movements, and expressions possible with one fan veil. Unlike two-handed fan veil work, single-handed fan veils offer distinct possibilities in flow, isolations, and body framing. Students will delve into fan veil anatomy and learn how to hold and manipulate the fan veil with grace and precision. The class will focus on foundational movements, body framing, traveling steps, and basic turns—all while discovering how to create dynamic shapes with a single fan.
Striptease will be part of this act!
We kindly request that you refrain from wearing chain jewelry or any accessories that may snag or get caught on the silk fabric of the fan veils.
Level: All levels/intermediate
Please note: This class is ideal for folks who have a little movement experience under their shimmy belt! You do not need to have experience with fan veils, but it is not ideal for absolute movement beginners!
Students will also get:
A pair of fan veils to keep!
Must satisfy at least one of the following prerequisites:
A Group Choreo series
A Burlesque Act Development series
Have taken at least 10 movement classes.
If you feel you have sufficient experience outside of the Philadelphia Burlesque Academy, please email us and tell us a little about that!
Expectations and Important Details:
Costume! Students will be required to supply their own costume pieces, embellishments, and shoes that align with given structure and colors, as well as add embellishments to a bra.
Rehearse! Students are expected to spend 30 minutes per week outside of class practicing their choreography. Their will be a video posted to a private Facebook group each week for reference!
All classes/ rehearsals are required! We know emergencies happen, but if you anticipate missing more than 1 class, please do not register for this series. This is for your benefit!

Jewelissa is a multi-hyphenate performer based in South Jersey renowned for their narrative burlesque, fusion belly dance, and silk veil prowess. They began their burlesque journey in 2017 at the Philadelphia Burlesque Academy, graduating from the Burlesque Act Development program and debuting as a bellyesque (burlesque and belly dance) performer. They have taught and performed at events such as BeardFest, Anahata's Purpose, and Raven's Night in DC. Recently winning Season X of the Philadelphia Burlesque Battle Royale, Jewelissa was dubbed "Pandora's Box of Philly Burlesque," as their performances continuously defied expectations and left audiences spellbound week after week.
Drawing inspiration from their background in colorguard and flow arts, Jewelissa brings a fresh and unique perspective to fan veil technique and group movement. They are thrilled about teaching at the Philadelphia Burlesque Academy and are eager to share their passion and expertise of fan veils with other burlesque performers!
