Sophie Sucré teaches Black Burlesque History

Sophie Sucré by Photolena

Knowing one’s history is tantamount to learning where we come from and where we’re going.

The history of Burlesque has been archived both by it’s fans and by the living legends sharing their wisdom and knowledge today. Black and POC Burlesque history is harder to find. Our country’s history of racism and marginalization has kept the history of our Black and POC legends/performers somewhat in the dark. Black Burlesque History intends to shine a light on performers often forgotten or unknown. Learn about POC performers who were breaking laws, fighting racism with their performances, and creating space for POC performers today.

Please bring a notebook and pen.

About

The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy started as the Peek-A-Boo Dance Clinic in 2012 when the Peek-A-Boo Revue moved their rehearsal home to their little studio on Cedar and Cumberland Streets in Fishtown.

The first few classes were taught by out of town guests – the world renowned Coco Lectric from Austin, Texas was the very first. In 2013 Peek-A-Boo’s Ginger Leigh started teaching beginner burlesque classes to students who returned week after week. Not only did their skills improve, their confidence and self love soared. Ginger knew something amazing was happening and that there was no other choice but to build on what had been started.

More guest instructors came through with workshops, including Darlinda Just Darlinda, Scotty The Blue Bunny, and Lola Forst just to name drop a few. Peek-A-Boo Revue’s Sophie Sucre and Cherry Bomb also joined the league of instructors. In 2016 it was time to expand further and give Philadelphia a true home for burlesque education. A place where people can simply have fun learning burlesque basics, as well as a place for new and experienced performers to learn from each other, practice their art, and build their community. The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy is a place where many burlesque methodologies can be found from performers and teachers from all over Philadelphia and beyond!

Instructors

Ginger Leigh
Director of Burlesque Education

Ginger Leigh has been performing with Philadelphia’s own Peek-A-Boo Revue neo-burlesque show since since 2006 and is also currently the Creative Director. She is hailed as “the petite powerhouse” and loves combining her classical dance training with the art of the striptease. Ginger has been teaching burlesque classes since 2012 and teaches fitness classes throughout Philadelphia. Among the things she enjoys boasting about are: a BA in Dance Studies from the University of South Florida, Peek-A-Boo’s title of Best Troupe from Burlesque Hall of Fame 2008 and 2012, being awarded Best Duet with Cherry Bomb in The Great Southern Exposure Burlesque Festival 2013, and group performances in the New York, Colorado, and Philadelphia Burlesque Festivals. Spreading the love of burlesque through education and entertainment brings Ginger Leigh unparalleled heart-singing joy!

Sophie Sucre

Sophie Sucre hales from Guyana, South America and was raised in the belly of Memphis, Tennessee. After Graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA) with a BFA in Dance and Choreography, Sophie traded in her cap and gown for newly minted tassel pasties as a hot to trot ensemble member of Philadelphia’s Premiere Burlesque Troupe, the Peek a Boo Revue, in 2009. Sophie Sucre has also performed with Brown Girls Burlesque, IdiosynCrazy Productions, Anonymous Bodies, and as a headliner in the 2016 Philadelphia Burlesque Festival.

Cherry Bomb

Cherry Bomb has been involved in the arts her whole life, but found her true calling as a burlesque dancer in 2005. She has been performing with The Peek-a-Boo Revue since 2005 and recently took over as the group’s Managing Director. She performed with the group when they won Best Troupe at The Burlesque Hall of Fame in 2008 and 2012, and when they appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2010. Coming from a musical theater background, Cherry Bomb’s performance style includes dancing, singing and acting. Her acts range from Classic to Neo to Character studies. Cherry Bomb also teaches burlesque and musical theater workshops and poses as a figure model.
