Philadelphia burlesque legend and Trocadero Chorus Girl Penny Star Sr. began humbly. Starting at the girly-shows in the carnivals and coal regions of Pennsylvania, she moved up, fast. She hasn’t slowed down yet. These days you can still catch her appearing beside her grand-daughter Penny Starr Jr. She will be back as a performing Legend during the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, NV.

Pillow Talk with Pillow 3:30-5:00P.M.

Pillow Talk (also known as Pillow Talks) is about the power dynamics of performing, chiefly through the experiences she has had over her long arc as a stage-artist. Burlesque Legen Pillow
During a 90 minute session, Pillow will regale you with:

    • Tales of dealing with outrageous coworkers and how to manage that to your benefit.
    • Hostile audiences and how to defend against that.
    • Dealing with hecklers and where to bury the bodies without legal trouble.
    • How to politely turn down offers of matrimony and undying devotion from complete strangers just because they’ve seen you naked (this is easier and more satisfying than you might think).

A short summation of this “Ted-Talk’ of burlesque is this: “How I tried this – and it didn’t work. So now you don’t have to suffer as i did. The mortifications of my many yesterdays can indeed become today’s amusing anecdote, and lessons for your enrichment.”

Beginning as an exotic dancer in 1976, Pillow was already an outspoken advocate and pioneer in the nascent world of women’s physique, both as an entertainer and model. She boasts many titles as a competitor and gained national attention on a variety of muscle magazines in the early 1980s. In 1995 she won the title of Miss Exotic World at what is now known as The Burlesque hall of Fame. She refused to switch from old-style stripping to the modern exotic “in-your-face & lap” format, committed (instead) to being an example of “The good ol’ days” of burlesque all thru the 1980s & 1990s. Her home base remained Anchorage nightclub, PJ’s, for 2 decades, until her untimely retirement in 2000. Though in reality she remained an artist via costume & character work was her stage time status quo, a seasoned CosPlayer long before the term was coined, she performed as Princess Leia to her partner’s Darth Vader on stage when the movie was new in the theaters (1977). She also performed as a variety of Klingons in latter years. AND is known (rightfully) as the ONLY Burlesque Legend to speak and write in Klingon.

The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy started as the Peek-A-Boo Dance Clinic in 2012 when the Peek-A-Boo Revue moved their rehearsal home to their little studio on Cedar and Cumberland Streets in Fishtown.

The first few classes were taught by out of town guests – the world renowned Coco Lectric from Austin, Texas was the very first. In 2013 Peek-A-Boo’s Ginger Leigh started teaching beginner burlesque classes to students who returned week after week. Not only did their skills improve, their confidence and self love soared. Ginger knew something amazing was happening and that there was no other choice but to build on what had been started.

More guest instructors came through with workshops, including Darlinda Just Darlinda, Scotty The Blue Bunny, and Lola Forst just to name drop a few. Peek-A-Boo Revue’s Sophie Sucre and Cherry Bomb also joined the league of instructors. In 2016 it was time to expand further and give Philadelphia a true home for burlesque education. A place where people can simply have fun learning burlesque basics, as well as a place for new and experienced performers to learn from each other, practice their art, and build their community. The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy is a place where many burlesque methodologies can be found from performers and teachers from all over Philadelphia and beyond!
